Parigi è stata la città che ha reso famoso Cristobal Balenciaga, ma è Getaria che lo ha ispirato, formato come esperto sarto e originale creatore di abiti. [...]

Located in Getaria, Spain, the museum was first designed by cuban architect Julian Argilatos then revised and completed by architects Victoria Garriga and Toño Foraster memebers of AV62 studio in Barcelona, and costed about € 30 million.

The museum will exhibit a collection of original outfits and accessories, as well as drawings and sketches witnessing the greatest care and tayloring ability that Cristobal Balenciaga instilled in his creations of haute couture. In the sixties he was at the top of his success, he created dresses for Grace Kelly, the wedding dress of Queen Fabiola of Belgium and also the uniforms for Air France airline's hostess'.

Then, when the pret-a-porter was spread, he decided to retire from the scene by refusing to draw mass-produced clothes, far away from his handmade creations of haute couture. The brand Balenciaga has instead continued to do fashion, and is now very popular in the United States where the celebrities are happy to show its creations.

E proprio a Getaria, nei Paesi Baschi, è stato costruito il museo a lui dedicato, su progetto preliminare dell'architetto cubano Julian Argilagos, poi rivisitato e portato a termine dagli architetti Victoria Garriga e Toño Foraster dello studio AV62 di Barcellona, con una spesa di circa 30 milioni di euro.

Nel museo sarà esposta una collezione di abiti e accessori originali, oltre a disegni e bozzetti autografi che testimoniano la grandissima cura e abilità sartoriale che Cristobal Balenciaga infondeva nelle sue creazioni di alta moda. Negli anni '60 Balenciaga era all'apice del successo, disegnò abiti da giorno per Grace Kelly, abiti da sposa per la regina del Belgio e le divise delle hostess della compagnia di bandiera francese Air France. Quando si diffuse il Pret a Porter, Balenciaga decise di ritirarsi dalle scene rifiutandosi disegnare abiti prodotti in serie, troppo lontani dalle sue creazioni artigianali di alta sartoria. Il marchio Balenciaga ha invece continuato a fare moda, ed è molto apprezzato negli Stati Uniti dove le celebrities sfoggiano volentieri le sue creazioni.
